Energetic Communities

Energetic Communities

What are energy communities?

Peruvian regulations still do not define the concept in question. For its part, the European Union defines Citizen Energy Communities as those legal entities that are based on voluntary and open participation, whose effective control is exercised by partners or members, who may be natural persons, local authorities, including municipalities or small businesses.

These represent a new form of cooperation or non-profit association – or any type of legal entity in accordance with the provisions on the matter – that carry out various activities, among which the following can be mentioned: (i) renewable electricity generation; (ii) provide energy efficiency services; (iii) distribute, supply, consume, and store generated energy; (iv) public policy proposal; among others.

How are energy communities related to the energy transition?

These communities have a fundamental role in the aforementioned process because it implies providing citizens with instruments to organize and implement renewable energy systems and the use of distributed generation systems to generate energy that will be consumed by the community itself. This is because citizen participation, along with the measures proposed by the State, is very important for the implementation of changes in the sector.

What are some of the benefits of implementing these communities?

Improve energy security,

· Promote the use of renewable energies,

Reduce costs for electricity consumption, and

· Promote energy efficiency.

How is an energy community formed?

The German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety proposes the following steps:

1. Define the group

2. Define the shape of the project

3. Contact with municipalities

4. Objective of the project

5. choose technologies

6. Process permits

7. Define forms of financing

8. Continue to promote these communities
